Locations in Great Lunden

Stabb’s Meats

Jacob Stabb always hangs his ‘deal of the day’ outside his abattoir in Slaughter Ward. His wife keeps telling him not to kill any animals that run off right outside the front — the blood puts folk off.

Coming Soon

There will be 20 building elevations like the above, 17 are complete and coloured. 1 left to colour, 2 left to ink and colour. They will be an A5 page of elevation, an A5 page of floorplans, and an A5 page of game info – That’s 60 pages alone.

Each one will be marked on the main maps, so your players can find it easily.

The poster maps are proceeding well now with the main map 98% complete:

GL map

There will be 4x A2 maps which are enlarged quarters, as well as a slightly more zoomed in inner wards map. Those are created and just need labels adding.

The sewer map is completed now.

That’s it for now. #shattered.

Sewer Map WIP – City of Great Lunden

The City of Great Lunden is the most ambitious single project I have ever worked on from a mapping perspective…

#themidderlands #themidderlands3 #thecityofgreatlunden #cityofgreatlunden #kickstarter.

With a Kickstarter campaign now planned for launch early-mid March, now is the time to start generating as much hype as you can. Please feel free to post information about The Midderlands — any adventures you’ve played/ran, any reviews, general shout-outs of spontaneous joy, etc. And please, please, please mention the upcoming Kickstarter. This is the kind of things that helps generate exposure and secure funding.

In terms of poster maps (A2), there should be:

  • (85% complete) Great Lunden and its Environs.
  • (75%) Great Lunden Enlarged NE region (with streetnames and such).
  • (75%) Great Lunden Enlarged NW region (with streetnames and such).
  • (75%) Great Lunden Enlarged SE region (with streetnames and such).
  • (75%) Great Lunden Enlarged SW region (with streetnames and such).
  • (75%) Great Lunden Inner Wards
  • (60%) Sewer Network (Inner Wards only).
  • (0%) Rooftop Chase map.

The Ward Map (99%) will be the rear endpaper (so A4):

I have been working on the sewer map today:

The book that accompanies all this is planned to be a 192 to 224 page A5 hardcover like the other Midderlands books.

It will also feature all these cool buildings I’ve been drawing too… with information about who owns them, adventure seeds, and layouts.

THIS will be the book that the 13-year-old me would have drooled over and loved! You won’t want to miss it.

Cha’alt Kickstarter – Last Chance plus Free Material.

As I type this (Thursday), there are an ever-decreasing 4 days left to go (82% funded) on the Cha’alt Kickstarter. In what I believe will be Venger’s magnum opus, it is also the last time to see my influences in his works. It’s our last project together, and I would like to see it succeed and then some. I am sure it will fund as it’s so close already, and with the last funding bump to come, it will just be a case of how far past the line it goes.

In an effort to help it along, Venger has commissioned some material for an adventure that is not part of the infamous Black Pyramid — it’s called Beneath Kra’adumek.

I’ve done the layout and the cartography. The PDF weighs in at 14 pages, and it’s FREE for everyone. Check out the cool, laser pistol-holding cybernetic, tentacle-wrapped arm on the map – it’s joyous.

Grab the FREE files here:

If you like it, please consider jumping on the Kickstarter. There is a beautiful hardcover version I am eager to have my hands on later in the year. It promises to be a visual feast and a direction I am eager to see Venger take in the future:

Stockton Keep

This is the 11th structure that will be detailed in The City of Great Lunden book. 20 are planned, all with a full colour elevation of all/part of the structure on one page, plan on a second page, and notes on a third page.

That’s 60 pages of fun you can drop into any game for starters!

Be sure to reserve some funds and follow me on Kickstarter to get notified when the next project launches (early March).

Now it needs colour…

The City of Great Lunden

So, many of you know that I am underway with the planning and preparation stage for the third Midderlands book, The City of Great Lunden.

As it currently stands, the book is about 20k words in, with a 60-70k target, so still plenty more to do before I launch the Kickstarter between now and beginning of March.

So, what is currently planned:

  1. An A5 hardcover book detailing the city and its surrounding wards.
  2. A reversible A2 folded map of:
    • Front: Great Lunden and its surroundings.
    • Rear: The Inner Wards of Great Lunden.
  3. A reversible A2 folded map of:
    • Front: Some of the rooftops of the Inner Wards (for rooftop chases).
    • Rear: The sewer network.
  4. Six A5 Pregen character cards (for convention games and pregen use). These will also feature is a short story within the book, written by Richard Marpole.
  5. Other stuff that I have rattling around in my head.
pregen.jpg
One of the pregenerated characters, Tessa Tennant. She is one of the ‘The Gardeners of Walshale’. This shows the front and rear of the A5 card. Character Art by Juan Ochoa.
Gl WIP
This is my current WIP map of The City of Great Lunden. There is still A LOT to do on this.
Street names
This is my current notes on details of the Inner Wards. It’s keeping me on the straight and narrow with regards to street names and such.

Anyway… back to the grindstone.

Off the Beaten Path: Mountain Excursions (KS)

The industrious Thom Wilson at Throwigames is back with another of his fabulous ‘Excursions’ Kickstarters. This time it’s Mountain Excursions.

It’s only a short KS and already funded, so don’t miss out on it.

I will be helping the project along with map upgrades. I’ve done some already, and hopefully more to come as the days unfold. Check out the project here:

Cha’alt (KS)

So, some of you may remember that Venger Satanis and I were working on one last project together, and most of the pre-design for the layout had been done already when the decision was made.

It’s just released on Kickstarter. Check out Cha’alt.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vengersatanis/chaalt

From early discussions with Venger, and all the work done on the design, this one felt different. More serious. Irrespective of what you think about Venger’s online persona, his writing is evocative, imaginative, and often humorous. I think this Kickstarter will show what Venger is capable of when not immersed in the sleazy sci-fi worlds of boobs and codpieces.

The artwork for this is another level. Have you seen those Yannick Bouchard pieces? Yannick does a lot of LotFP art – he’s a master at his craft.

I am due for layout and cartography work on the project and will do my very best to ensure it meets the high expectations that you all deserve. As a fitting end to my time working with Venger, I think this product is the one to do it with — this will be his Magnus Opus to date. I will put my heart and soul into it, as I do with everything I do.

Please consider backing it.

Lost Hall of Tyr – Encounter Maps

After a successful Kickstarter campaign run by Gaming Ballistic, I’m working on updating the 7x encounter maps for the Lost Hall of Tyr.

Doug Cole is the mastermind behind Gaming Ballistic, and is an all-round great guy. You can often find him getting kidnapped into online chats with Matt Finch over on Uncle Matt’s RPG Studio.

Lost Hall of Tyr (2nd Edition) is a mini-setting and adventure for the Dragon Heresy Roleplaying game. Dragon Heresy is a self-contained complete game in one volume, and the Introductory Set covers Level 1-5.

Lost Hall of Tyr (2nd Edition) contains

  • A non-linear adventure for 4-7 characters of Level 1-5
  • A detailed workup of the Viking-inspired town of Isfjall, suitable as either a home port for an extended campaign or a jumping off point for the adventure
  • Rules for overland journeys in the wild north, several adventuring locations, and of course the quest to rediscover the Lost Hall itself
  • A bestiary containing all the key creatures from the adventure, including the Dragon Heresy unique stats pre-calculated (Threat DC, Hit DC, wound and control thresholds, wounds, and vigor)

Lost Hall of Tyr is 112 pages long, in full color.

The main maps are already completed, as they were done as part of the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy, Hall of Judgment version done by me. Here’s one showing the region, and also the Rival Claim encounter location, just across from the Rope Bridge:

Rival Claim

So, let’s take a look at the first map, Rival Claim. In the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy, Hall of Judgment version, it looks like this:

So, the brief was to create an encounter map that was easier to read, and also show the trees and trail leading north, and also the rope bridge to the south. Here’s my rough sketch:

01 Rival Claim SKETCH r1 96dpi

The rope bridge was a little too wide, so I narrowed it in the final. I used ArtRage 5 for this mainly. The final labelling and scale bar/compass was added in Photoshop CC 2019.

20190104_143856549_iOS
A photo of my screen, prior to labels, scale and compass

The stones and trees were created separately as ‘sticker sheets’. I then used a sticker spray brush to place them with a slight variation to the rotation, hue, and scale. I then went back and added consistent highlight and shadow to each element.

And this is the low resolution version of the final map. It came out pretty well.

Do you want to get all these maps, and a cool adventure — and even pick up Dragon Heresy too? Then head over to the pre-order here: https://lost-hall-of-tyr-2nd-edition-maps-and-print-run.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders
