I Love Swords & Wizardry

Disclaimer: I’m not getting paid for this. I’m not involved in the project, but I have done work for Frog God Games in the past.

You know I love Swords & Wizardry, right?

I enjoy it so much, I created a entire trilogy of settings books for it, and other supporting materials with over 700 pages of content – The Midderlands. I made them A5 format (6x 8.5-ish”), so they are more easily used at the table.

So, when Frog God Games decided to launch a Kickstarter for a small-form factor, digest-sized boxed set of the Complete version of the product – my favourite, I nearly did a joy-poo. Separate books, Collector’s Edition boxes, it’s got it all.

Hot on the heels of the Old School Essentials success, this product is just what I wanted! Check it out: Swords and Wizardry: Limited and Collectors Edition Box Sets

What do I like about S&W so much?

For me, it feels like AD&D used to back in the day, although it’s rules are based in the OD&D traditions. It encourages ‘theatre of the mind’ play, it’s not complicated with myriad rules, and its perfect for beginning players as well as veterans. If third edition was a crunchy bag of pork rind, S&W is a velvety chocolate delight. You can almost run the rules without the book after a few sessions. it’s simply, old school gaming at its very best. Matt Finch has blended together a perfect combination of old school feel and play ability from the beginnings of the hobby, and it deserves to be sitting on your shelf, if not sitting on your game table.

As of this post, you’ve got 20+ days left and it’s already at over $64k. It’s burning through highly-achievable, almost zero risk stretch goals. Christmas is only 10 months away, get yourself an early present!

Poster Maps, Buildings and Witches

Poster Maps

I know I have talked about the poster maps for The City of Great Lunden a little bit, but I have now created a couple of 3D mock-ups to help explain it better.

This has so far been a colossal undertaking.

In this first image, all the maps to the bottom of the screen are front, and the ones to the top of the screen are reverses.

MonkeyBlood_0426

They are (BL-BR, then TL-TR):

  • Full City Map (no annotations)
  • Inner Wards Map (annotated)
  • Sewer Network (annotated)
  • Rooftop Chase (no art yet)
  • Enlarged Full City map (NE) (annotated)
  • Enlarged Full City map (NW) (annotated)
  • Enlarged Full City map (SE) (annotated)
  • Enlarged Full City map (SE) (annotated)

All these maps are A2 (folded to A5).

…and because the Enlarged Full City maps are on the reverse of all the other 4 maps, they can be assembled together to create an A0 map.

As an aside, this is a low-resolution version of the ward map that will go in the rear endpaper. It shows all the ward names, with a ward summary to the left:

Map 09 Great Lunden A4 WARD MAP r1 LORES

Buildings

And here are all the current elevations done for the ‘detailed’ structures (18/20). I am so happy with how these have turned out.

Keep your eye out for the Kickstarter coming in Mid-march, and all this AND MORE can be yours.

And to Close… The Gateway to Hell

A couple of midderfolk pointed me to this Guardian article… I told you there were witches afoot!

“If there is a gateway to hell, a portal from the underworld used by demons and witches to wreak their evil havoc on humanity, then it could be in a small east Midlands cave handy for both the M1 and A60.”

WitchPig Deck of Many Things

So, I knocked up some quick tables for using WitchPig decks for the Deck of Many Things. Get it here: WitchPig Deck of Many Things r1

Don’t worry if it doesn’t display correctly, the WordPress built-in viewer makes the text squiffy sometimes. Just download it and it should be fine.

Coriolis Intro Session

Today was my f2f group’s annual all-day get together. Apart from myself, 5 were invited. One no show and one late-comer. We had planned to just do some board games, card games, maybe a quick RPG session… anything goes.

I’d been planning all week to run a one-shot of Coriolis – The Third Horizon as a surprise game. I like the system, I like the setting, and I felt I could run it partly on the fly if needed.

I’d written a one page adventure outline/intro, and rolled 4 pre-generated character concepts;

  • Pilot > Freighter Pilot (female)
  • Operative > Spy (male)
  • Soldier > Mercenary (male)
  • Scientist > Medicurg (female)

Group Concept was Freetraders with the Everything is for Sale group talent.

20181222_125956167_iOS

As we started with three players, the first three pregens were snapped up. The groups patron, Aldair Jubal (Jubal’s Imports and Exports) — to whom they owe over 1,000,000 birr for the spacecraft they ‘own’ — had contacted the characters to get them to collect a shipment from the city of Mehriba on the planet Lauba.

Their craft, the Nazralus, was docked at Coriolis, and after a quick Pilot check to get out of the space station, they headed for the journey to Lauba…

Once successfully landed at Mehriba (described as a pre-war Aleppo, or even Mos Eisley), the landing admin checks noted a previous security alert placed on the ship (for an altercation with Hyperion Logistics at Aram’s Ravine on Jina), and said that it had to be called in to security. After a Manipulation check, 100 birr ensured that the admin officer ignored the note.

They set out to find their contact at Okreem Bazaar not too far from the spacecraft landing field (like Las Vegas plane graveyard). They met their well-to-do contact surrounded by pillows and a harem, in a club backroom, where the haze of arrash hung in the air. Giving them directions to the warehouse where the shipment was stored, they were ushered out by the contacts bodyguards, who said they would escort them to the warehouse. Meeting some friends on the way, the bodyguards stopped to talk, and shooed the characters on to the warehouse to catch up later.

Once at the warehouse, the door was opened using the security coded lock and in they went. A rear door was slightly open, which was closed by the Mercenary. They found the cargo shipment and a grav loader and as they started to load crates, five mercenary raiders leapt out from their hiding locations. Using cover and fire support, the Mercenary and three raiders were downed. The remaining two mercenaries fled. At that point, the contacts bodyguards arrived and helped remove the bodies and help load the grav platform.

A short time later, they arrived with the load, and with a wink the admin officer waved the grav platform through to load up. A quick Pilot check later, and they were on their way out of orbit. After cracking open a few crates, they found that the cargo was full of rifles and grenades. As this was a one-shot, they characters had the choice of…

a) Heading back to Coriolis, and passing the cargo to Aldair.

or

b) Making a run for the portals and jumping systems with the cargo.

They went for b.

A great game, and a lot of fun. I think there is some mileage to be had here. A few rules cropped up that I wasn’t sure about, but made player-friendly rulings to keep the game fun and fast. There’s nothing more satisfying about rolling a pile of six-sided die… feels like a Fireball or a Lightning Bolt, or a lot of Warhammer 40K to-hit rolls.

An old school adventure set in a damp version of the north of England (Havenland) near the Scottish (Scrottish) border. The Romans (Gomans) left their mark on the landscape in more ways than one. Of course, this adventure is compatible with The Midderlands settings, and Swords & Wizardry or other retroclone rules.

Players Introduction

The adventure takes place in the north of Havenland, near to the Scrottish borders by the Kelderwater lake (see Hex M09 of The Haven Isles map).

Ebeneezer Garbett, a local farmer from the mushroom-filled valley village of Otterdale, returned to the hamlet with tales of riches he had found. Now, no-one has seen him since, and he villagers are becoming ill with a strange fungal infection.

Game Master’s Information

A farmer from the small village of Otterdale has discovered the ruins of an ancient Goman fortification. Half-buried in a hillside, it has been revealed by recent torrential rains.

Taking the gold he discovered there back to the village, the farmer is unaware that he has disturbed a dormant fungal creature known as the Mullach Dubh – a mould that grows on the dead, absorbing their memories and re-animating their bodies into a terrible half-life.

Unaware of this, the farmer — Ebeneezer Garbett — returned to his farmstead and succumbed to the toxic spores that he had breathed in. However, his stories had already drawn treasure seekers to the area in search of Goman riches. These adventurers, the Eagle’s Talon Adventuring Company, disappeared into the fortress and were likewise subsumed into the fungal colony.

People in Otterdale who had contact with Ebeneezer have begun to succumb to the spores, growing sick and then returning from death as grim parodies of their former selves. Meanwhile, the controlling colony seeks to use these new ‘workers’ to rebuild the glories of the long-gone Goman Empire.

This adventure is intended for low level play and can be scaled up or down accordingly. It should work best with 4× Level 1-4 player characters.

48-pages, die-drop chart to rear. You can check out the quick flip-through here:
